WHAT IS #THATMOMENT FOR YOU?

#ThatMoment is the epiphany when we realise how far we have come, after taking steps to embrace fitness into our lives.

It is when we realise that our dedication to fitness has paid off because we are now able to do something with much more ease than before.

the most inspiring stories of #thatmoment

At Fitness First, we believe that feeling fit gives you the confidence, energy and self-belief to go further in life. We are happy to share the winning stories we have received!

  • WINNER: GOMEZ GIOLINNI SANTIA
I have one leg shorter than the other by and inch and a half. It is wreaking havoc in the alignment all over my body and putting me off balance. I have a winged scapula, persistent lower back pain, IT band pain and left knee pain. Even finding a pair of shoes would be a daunting task. I knew I had to find a way to counter the impending degeneration of my body.

So, I focussed on working on my posture so I get to live on without having more problems when I get older. Then I signed up for Fitness First and adopted Amy Seow's Body Balance as my pet class on Mondays. It's at #ThatMoment I've learned how to manage my aches and pains. What Fitness First brings me is damn good quality gym experience while enjoying group classes with @yix.stagram, @thewackytraveller and @yuberlicious who I've known in the gym over the years. Oh, and to all my awesome instructors, thank you for so much Love and Energy. ❤
  • WINNER: maverick cai
“Everybody has a plan until they get punched in the face” - Mike Tyson.

During my late 20s, I had similar plan like most guys - bulk up, thick chest, 6 pack abs, etc. Everything crashed down when the sports doctor revealed that I had to give up muaythai and lifting weights to reduce risks to spinal injury. When MMA was the latest craze 5 years ago, a “friendly” sparring session left me intense pain in lower back and a fractured left shin as a result of a kicking barrage combined with an unforgiving forward body slam into concrete ground. Through Ben Tang’s BodyBalance IMT FitnessFirst SG, I discovered simple rehab exercises that can reduce my suffering and redemption to active lifestyle. #ThatMoment, a glint of hope spawned.

After joining Fitness First Singapore as a Fitness Instructor in 2014, my pursuit for greater knowledge revolved around injury rehabilitation, restoring biomechanics, and strengthening muscles to reduce risks of similar injury recurrence and/or endure/improve performance. Many peers across the company and industry shared their knowledge with such generosity that I was able to craft out my own training programme to focus thrice weekly basis over the next 18 months.

Soon results of this training programme exhibit improvements in joint stability, muscular strength and endurance to progressively endure longer distance jogs, roundhouse kicks and shin blocks with little to no pain. Hitting the pads & clinching become reality once more. On 9 Sep 2017 (a month before my wedding), I participated in my first muaythai bout ever since my injuries. Despite severe ring rust, it’s also physically grueling to be matched against an opponent 10kg heavier as co-main event. #ThatMoment was petrifying real when the bell ringed off our last 2nd bout of *Infernal Affairs 3* at 3 rounds of 3 minutes. It’s killed or be killed. Full steam engaged in our kicks, punches, knees, sweeps, throws, etc. For every attack he came forth, my logic was justifying our obvious weight class difference and contradicting my foolish pursuit for personal dreams.Thankfully for a rambunctious corner (comprising of my teammates & PT clients), emotions got the better of logic to empower instinctive blocks and delivering fluid combos. My favorite stinging roundkicks led the onslaught. Victory was guaranteed when my right knee nailed straight into his abs for the 3rd time of the night during Round 2.

My quote “Give yourself an excuse to win” was born #ThatMoment

"I’ve never thought that I would be a Group Exercise Instructor. I enjoyed working out in my free time and one of my favourite classes was BodyBalance in Fitness First. I’m a firm believer that we should seek a workout that we enjoy doing, so that it is no longer a chore. And without realizing it, we get fitter and stronger while having a good time. #ThatMoment when I realised I wanted to go beyond just being fit, but inspire others around me as well. One thing led to another, and now I am a certified Group Exercise Instructor at Fitness First! Come and join me in a BodyBalance class and experience a little piece of oasis in the midst of a hectic lifestyle."

"I had always been into running marathons and weightlifting. One unfortunate day, I sprained my ankle badly during Muay Thai. When I recovered, I couldn’t put much weight on my feet, so I had to look for another favourite form of fitness exercise. I turned to RPM, an indoor cycling program. Loving how euphoric the workout made me feel, I eventually pursued the program wholeheartedly and became an instructor with Fitness First. It was #ThatMoment when fitness as a hobby, grew into a passion and a career, as I yearned to help people around me discover their #ThatMoment – just as I did."

"I was forever the fat kid since Day 1. TAF (Trim & Fit) Club was my obligatory hangout from Primary school to Secondary school. Because fitness was forced upon me, I never liked to exercise because it was “painful” and I did not like feeling sweaty, sticky and smelly – adding on to the embarrassing nicknames given to me. This continued all the way up to my National Service (NS) years. It wasn’t until the last few months of my NS stint where an ex-classmate brought me over to Fitness First One George Street for a trial. #ThatMoment I attended BodyJAM, it was so enjoyable that I signed up for a membership right there and then. I never knew exercising can be so fun! Long story short - the kid who used to hate exercising, found passion in working out and became a Group Exercise Manager to share the benefits of group exercise to other like-minded enthusiasts. Though there are days where we are tempted to skip a class due to soreness and aches, the thought of the fun and adrenaline I get from Group Exercise Classes help motivate me. #ThatMomentIAmStrongerThanMyExcuses #ChangeHappensWhenYouStopGivingYourselfExcuses"

"I have always been physically active. I enjoy Physical Education classes, was part of the school's Basketball team in secondary school and joined the Pugilistic Society in Junior College, learning basic Wushu and lion dance. However, when it comes to real dancing, I'll have four left feet and a severe stiffness when moving my body! It was not until I was introduced to Les Mills BODYCOMBAT, that I developed the confidence to move freely and rhythmically with music. It was #ThatMoment when I realised I had confidently acquired another form of exercising! It also spurred me to never prevent myself from trying new things just because I am poor at it, as the fact remains that I am now addicted to BODYCOMBAT. That first step into Group Exercises led me to where I am today – living, breathing and loving my job as a Group Exercise Instructor."

"Over the years, my lifestyle, hobbies, hairstyles, fashion sense, and even food choices have changed. But what remains constant is my unwavering love for Dance. #ThatMoment when I knew that Dance would always be part of my identity, I knew it was in me to share it with others. The joy of dancing is derived from the form of expression, which is something I would like everyone to feel once in a lifetime. Over a decade later, I am still constantly in touch with #ThatMoment whenever I see members leaving my class happy and smiling. The positivity, energy and love for dance reverberates long after the class is over. What is also amazing are the wonderful people I have in my life today, that I would not have met if it wasn’t for dancing. And thanks to Dance, I’ve stopped thinking ‘I Can’t’, and have the mindset that ‘I Can’ do anything with practice."

"Eat, Sleep, Work, Play. Repeat. Life was comfortable but predictable and mundane, so I started to look at small, easy changes I can make. I joined Fitness First with a couple of friends and attended my first Group Exercise class- BodyJAM. It was a total disaster! I was uncoordinated and clumsy due to my current fitness level. My friends gave up, but I was determined to use this class to improve my fitness level to gain some self-confidence and a sense of achievement. I was attending 1 class a week to 3 a week to 1 a day. Then there was a day where I looked at myself in the mirror. In #ThatMoment, I noticed I was energized, fit, strong and glowing – moving without breathlessness or clumsiness. It was #ThatMoment when I realized that I have discovered the potential of my physical body, the resilience of my mind and the strength of my heart. From the school girl who hated running and skipped all her exercise classes, I am now a full-time Group Exercise instructor. Through fitness, I see a world of endless possibilities and all it takes is just one step at a time."

"Fitness has always been part of my life and my training started mostly in strength and lifting. I was once told that I couldn’t be an endurance athlete because I was too bulky and heavy. #ThatMoment made me think, that it won’t be up to anyone else to decide what I can or cannot achieve. I signed up for my first triathlon and trained aggressively for it. #ThatMoment when I crossed the finish line if is forever priceless to me and that feeling urged me to train harder to be a well-rounded athlete."

"#ThatMoment when the clock strikes 5.30 pm and it’s time for me to put aside my work and go for my netball trainings or workouts. Yes, #ThatMoment is my favourite time of the day! Exercising helps me cope with stress and prevents me from immune system deficiencies. It makes me forget about everything and become a stronger person, especially after I pushed myself through a tough workout. It acts as a stress reliever for me, and it makes me happy! A few weeks ago, I injured my ankle badly during a competition and I couldn’t walk for days. The incident made me really depressed as it kicked me out from competing. I told myself that I can’t be down for long so I decided to workout (without hurting my ankle) and stretch a lot! Trust me, it made me feel alive and I am more motivated to get back on court as soon as I can. Today, I am finally running. And I just can’t wait to be able to fly on court again."

"With constant emphasis on fitness during training, it helped me to become stronger, faster, and more agile on court. Ensuring that I could always stay one step ahead of my opponents. #ThatMoment the feeling of triumph after working so hard for the past year to win back the title after 14 years. #ThatMoment is ingrained. #ThatMoment is unforgettable."

"We have been training together and are currently competing as a team in beach volleyball. Apart from normal ball training, we do our best to maintain our fitness and build our physical strength in the gym. Our #ThatMoment happened when we saw how we could play at a standard of a strong international team that were coming onto podiums on world tours. Even though it was the first time that we were paired together in an international competition, we managed to play a good game to take a set from our opponent. Though we did not win that match, #ThatMoment have become our source of motivation to maintain that level of play, and we are excited to see what else we can build and achieve from our partnership. #ThatMoment also showed us how exercising gives us the strength and empowerment to perform our plays effectively and confidently. As a team, we cherish the celebration when we earn each point. We train hard to relive #ThatMoment and enjoy the celebration and cheers that come with each point we score. The road ahead will not be easy, but we will continue to do our best!"

"I have been dancing since Primary School, grew up dancing Hip Hop. I was exposed to Ballet in School of The Arts (SOTA) and from there on, it was a one-way trip to a dance career. I joined Singapore Dance Theatre last year but was struck with a knee injury a few months ago. I proceeded to undergo a knee surgery for the injury. After that, I was put through a rigorous rehabilitation programme to get me dancing again. While going through the rehab, I started to really enjoy the experience of working out to get stronger. It was #ThatMoment that I realised how much the gym training and extra exercises have really made my technique better, and to some extent, my body feels better than before my surgery. From then on, I have never neglected going to the gym to keep my knee and body fit and strong."

"#ThatMoment when it was finally my turn to represent Singapore. I’ve played netball for many years now and I've always struggled with being pushed around on court or not being able to last a full game. This year, I adopted a different approach. Instead of exercising only during court trainings, I set a target to hit the gym at least twice a week and train my fitness on my own. Although it was tiring in the beginning, I managed to find my momentum and remained disciplined to the regime. Progressively, I found myself feeling more confident and prepared to play. Months later, it all paid off. I’m glad I put my Fitness First."

"Our team's major breakthrough was in 2015 when we qualified for the 2016 Olympic Games to represent Singapore, by winning the World Cup event in Qingdao. For us, it was a special moment because we had a lot of challenges we had to fight through to be able to have that opportunity. Leading into the competition, we needed to put on 25kg as a team to meet the ideal combined weight that would allow us to perform at our best. In order to gain that amount of weight in muscle mass, we had to work extremely hard in the gym to meet our fitness goals. We were working out 9-10 times a week with double sessions on some days. The muscle gains had to be balanced with good cardio as well. We did a lot of cross-training (cycling, swimming, rock climbing, triathlons, HIIT) which was very important in keeping our workouts fun and different. It also gave us the opportunity to work out with other groups of people, which gave us a lot of energy and inspiration to push hard. When we arrived at the event, the work that we put in physically, gave us the confidence and self-belief to perform at the Olympic qualifiers in Qingdao. All that hard work paid off in #ThatMoment when we crossed the finish line in first position! We had become the first Singaporeans to win a World Cup and qualify for the 2016 Olympic Games!"
