I used to think that joining a gym and working out was a waste of time and money. However, all that changed after I signed up for an eleven-day mission trip to Tibet. Barely six weeks before the trip, I realised that I had to do something about my physical condition in order to cope with the high altitude of 12,000 feet above sea-level.
On 30th September 2007, I joined Fitness First, and upon my friend Pauline’s (who is also a member) recommendation, I signed up with Ram Toh as my Personal Trainer. Initially, I was not keen on having a male trainer as I has the misconception that only female trainers would be able to better understand a female trainee’s needs. However, after just a few sessions with Ram, I realised that I probably have one of the best trainers around!
Though Ram is tough, I thoroughly enjoy my training sessions with him because he has a keen sense of humour and he so readily imparts his vast knowledge and wisdom. More importantly, he is very committed to his clients and sees to it that we achieve the results or targets we set according to our physical conditions and current fitness levels. I respect Ram not because he comes with impressive credentials but because he possesses a strong sense of integrity and tenacity; not to mention that he ‘walks the talk’ as an accomplished tri-athlete himself.
After just 10 sessions with Ram over three weeks, I lost a whopping 4.6kg and 2% body fat. My waistline dropped from 34 inches to 32 inches, a feat I had never achieved in all my years of self-prescribed yo-yo dieting.
In November 2007, I made it to Tibet and back without suffering from any of the altitude sickness that some of my team mates experienced. I was proud to let my team members know that it was because I had been well-trained by Ram.
By 31st December 2007 and after 30 sessions with Ram, I had lost 7.2kg and 7.2% body fat. Today, my weight has dropped even further to 67kg and my pants size has dropped three sizes to 31 inches! Now I am proud to say that I can loose about 1kg a week and my cardio has improved tremendously too. Not only have I renewed my personal training package with Ram, I also intend to sign up my teenaged son to train under Ram to get him ready for NS next year. Besides that, my daughter has also joined Fitness First and is now a regular at the gym with her mom!
