Back in 2006, I moved back to Singapore as a full-time, single working mother. As a Risk Management Consultant, I was traveling 90% of the time across Asia, with very little time left to exercise. My submission to the temptation of local cuisine did nothing to help my waistline either. At that point, I was at my heaviest, weighing 62kg.
I joined Fitness First at Millenia Walk in October 2007. I had set a goal for myself to lose 10 – 15kg to get back to my pre-baby weight. I needed help with motivating myself to start an exercise regime that would cater to my busy lifestyle, what with the constant traveling as well as my motherly responsibilities. I thus decided to engage Mark Koh, my Personal Trainer, to help me with better time management in my quest to lose weight and get healthy.
In the initial months, I saw Mark 5 to 6 times a week for intense workouts. This was a gradual process as I had been inactive for over a year. I started out with 10 – 15 minutes of cardio prior to my Personal Training sessions with Mark, working my way up to 40 – 50 minute sessions. I also cut out carbohydrates, sugar, and alcohol from my diet, and would stop my consumption of food at 7pm daily as I would be in bed by 10pm.
I had to be very disciplined in getting to the gym first thing in the morning, usually at about 7am, and start the cardio sessions on my own. Following, Mark would customize my workouts according to the goals I had set. Mark worked with me on my problem areas and also encouraged me to keep a food journal. With the food journal, I became more conscious of what I put into my body, which in turn improved my diet. If I had a craving for anything bad, like Laksa or Hokkien Mee, I would indulge the craving by having 2 or 3 bites and stopped at that. Till today, I still maintain the food journal, just to see how far I have come with careful planning of my meals.
